Frequently Asked Questions

Standard Operating Procedures and General Information: Draw times from 10 seconds up to 45 seconds may be expected. Please allow the application to complete each request before continuing. Clicking another request before the operation has completed slows down the application and may cause an error.

Unexpected Results: If the browser appears to be displaying information from a previous request, close the existing browser and start a new one. This should not be a common occurrence.

If you click on the map and get a map of a different area of the county then you were in, its possible that your session has expired. The session expires after 20 minutes of inactivity in your browser. In this case, a new session will start with any new activity.
(Refer to question 22, How can I keep the same map extend once the session has expired?)

However, if a map click keeps displaying a map of a different area of the county, and you don't believe your session has expired, your browser security settings may need adjustment. This applications uses sessions to keep track of the current map extent. Security settings that are set too high or have cookies disabled block the session and will then use the default map extent (centered around Twain and Torrey Pines) on any map click. This will prevent you from getting the correct results when using any of the map click tools (select property, pan, zoom, or measure).

Select Property window stopped working: This application utilizes pop-up windows for selected property, legends, and other information. Any "pop-up killer" (ad blocker) utilities must be disabled in order to utilize this functionality. There are many varieties of these out there, but it should be possible to enable selected web sites without totally disabling the blocking utility.

General Questions
*****************

Q1: In the old application, Lot/Block numbers were shown. Where do I find them now ?
Certain pieces of text can no longer be seen on the map due to a technical limitation with the new environment. However, this information is available on the official  Assessor's Parcel map accessed via a hyperlink below the map frame or from the Select Property popup window which represents the same information.

Q2: How often is the data displayed in this application updated?
Other than the aerial photography, the data is updated every morning between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM. During that time the application is unavailable. The aerial photography is updated twice a year. (Refer to question 5, When was the aerial photography taken?)

Q3: I have a small monitor. Can I use the Large Map Size option?
Yes, you can use any Map Size you prefer. If the map becomes too large for your monitor and its internal sets, scroll bars will be added. For ease of use, it is recommended that you use the largest size (i.e. Small, Medium, Large) that does not result in scroll bars.

Q4: How do I find out more about a particular property on the screen?
Once you have the property in the map window, activate the Select Property button at the top of the map display and then click on a property. The application will then recreate the map display with the property highlighted and will produce a pop-up window with information related to the property. Some of the information in the pop-up window is hyperlinked to other resources which will provide additional information.

Q5: When was the aerial photography taken?
With the constant growth in Southern Nevada, aerial photography is required twice a year to support local governmental Geographic Information Systems (GIS) operations. The intent is to have new photography available in June and December of each year. The Help file will detail exactly which version is currently being displayed.

Q6: Why isn't the aerial photography clearer?
Displaying images on the Internet always involves a trade-off between picture quality and speed due to the size of the image files. If you require higher quality, you may consider purchasing the aerial photography in order to localize processing on your computer. (Refer to question 18, How can I purchase the aerial photography or some of the other data displayed on the map?)

Q7: Why are there not aerial photography for some parcels in rural areas ?
Aerial photography is focused on areas where there is significant population and no tree cover. To note, there is no aerial photography for Mt. Charleston, Lee Canyon, Cold Creek, Good Springs, The Valley of Fire or Red Rock Canyon.

Q8: Why do I have a problem printing the aerial photography?
Printing aerial photography requires significant computer resources including disk space and printer memory. Your system may not have the necessary resources available.

Q9: Why don't the property lines match the aerial photography?
Objects as seen on photography taken from an airplane does not exactly align with objects on the surface of the Earth for a number of technical reasons. Processes are available to correct each technical issue yet each process requires money. The aerial photography displayed is a balance between quality and money required for processing.

Q10: Why are not all properties color shaded on the Zoning View Types?
The application currently shades Zoning Classifications for properties of the View Type selected. There are plans underway to eventually display Boulder City Zoning Classifications.

Q11: Why are some properties cross hatched on some of the Zoning View Types?
The cross hatching represents properties that have an Resolution of Intent (ROI) pending. To put simply, ROI's are a property owners intent to change the Zoning Classification on the particular property. The ROI's can be detailed by using the Select Property functions.
(Refer to question 4, How do I find out more about a particular property on the screen?)

Q12: I know a particular person owns property. Why can't I find their name?
A property owner is not required to use their name when they purchase a property. There are other legal arrangements available which do not require listing individual name(s).

Q13: I know I have the correct address, why can't the application find it?
Addresses are recorded with the respective entity within which they fall (i.e. Boulder City, City of Las Vegas, City of Henderson, City of North Las Vegas, Clark County and Mesquite). Unfortunately, the recorded address is not always used by the property owner. Further complicating the situation, the United States Post Office recognizes addresses that have not been recorded thus giving the impression that the address is "official". The addresses represented in this application are recorded addresses and are limited to one recorded address per parcel.

Hint: If you have difficulty finding an address, use the Search By Cross Street to locate the general area and then zoom or pan to the specific area of interest.

Q14: Why does the application display a different address for a property from the one I use?
(Refer to question 13, I know I have the correct address, why can't the application find it?)

Q15: What happens when I type in a parcel number with a condominium on it?
For condominiums that are multiple stories, the application will zoom out to the common area for the entire condominium complex. This is due to the technical limitation of representing a three dimensional space (i.e. multiple stories) in a two dimensional map. Turning on the aerial will give the user a reference for the building layouts.

Q16: If I know a parcel number, how can I go directly there?
To go directly to a known parcel number, enter the number in the Specific Parcel# field and then Draw Selection button. This is an alternative to using the Search By functions (i.e. Owner, Site Address, Cross Streets).

Q17: How do I display a larger area without having to zoom out?
This requires a better understanding of the Clark County Assessors Parcel Numbering System. In brief, a five digit Book/Section number (ex. 13933) can be entered in the Parcel Number field to display the associated square mile and a six digit Book/Section/Page number (ex. 139337) can be entered in the Parcel Number field to display the associated eighty acres.

Q18: How can I purchase the aerial photography or some of the other data displayed on the map?
There are three methods for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data sharing in Southern Nevada. One of the methods is only available to local governmental agencies and the other two are available to public citizens and private companies.

Interlocal Agreements - These agreements have been in place since 1989 in order to promote data sharing among local governmental agencies in Southern Nevada. The Interlocal Agreements are the foundation for the efficiency and effectiveness improvements that local governments have been able to deliver to the public.

GIS Data Subscriptions - Annual subscriptions to the GIS Data Central Repository are available to private individuals and/or companies. The available data includes parcel ownership, zoning, street centerlines with addressing, aerial photography plus much more. For more information, refer to the Clark County GIS Data Request Form.

Individual Data Sales - As an option to the annual subscriptions, private individuals and/or companies can purchase subsets of the GIS Data Central Repository on a as needed basis. For more information, refer to the Clark County GIS Data Request Form.

Q19: How do I print out the map displayed?
There are a two different ways to do this.
1). From your browser menu bar select File then select Print.
2). Just outside the Map Frame, right click then select Print.
These will give you a snap shot of what you see in the map frame. To get a map with more information, In the select property window, there is a link that says "Click here for a printable map". This will open up a new window with the map along with information on the selected property. Use the print methods from step 1 or 2 above.

Q20: Is is okay to link my home computer to your web site?
Yes, add this path http://mapsrv.co.clark.nv.us/openweb/ to your browser favorites. This is a permanant redirect URL.

Q21: How can I access other County information on-line?
The County's web site (http://www.co.clark.nv.us) offers a variety of information for your use.

Q22: How can I keep the same map extend once the session has expired?
If you know that your browser has been open and inactive for over 20 minutes in OpenWeb, simply click the "Draw Selection" button before doing any map clicks and that will re-establish your session.

Once the session has expired (over 20 minutes of inactivity), the map extent that was saved in the session has been lost. Any mouse click on the map will use the default map extent coordinates which are roughly bounded by: Spring Mountain to the north, Flamingo to the south, Rainbow to the west and Jones to the east.

If this happens, there is a way to get back to where you were. Click your browsers back button (this should take you back to your previous map).
Click on the "Draw Selection" button. This will create a new session and use the current map extent. Now any mouse clicks on the map will have the correct mapextent and give you the expected results.
